The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is one of the most prestigious government jobs in India. To become an IAS Officer, one needs to clear the Civil Services Examination which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). However, to appear for this examination, one has to fulfill certain eligibility criteria, including educational qualification.
The educational qualification required for IAS includes a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification. The candidates who are in their final year of graduation can also apply for the IAS examination, but they should have completed their degree before the main examination. Apart from this, there are no specific subject requirements. The candidates can choose any subject in their graduation or post-graduation level.
The minimum qualifying marks for a degree is also not prescribed by the UPSC. However, it is recommended that candidates should have a good academic record to boost their chances of clearing the exam. It is also important to note that a higher education degree like a Master’s or PhD is not mandatory to appear for the IAS exam.
Apart from educational qualifications, a candidate has to fulfill other eligibility criteria for appearing in the IAS exam. The candidate should be:
1. An Indian citizen
2. Minimum Age limit of 21 years
3. Maximum Age limit of 32 years (at the time of applying)
Relaxations in the age limit are provided for candidates belonging to specific categories as per government rules.
It is essential to carefully read and understand the eligibility criteria before filling in the IAS exam application form. If a candidate is found to be ineligible at any stage of the selection process, his or her candidature will be canceled, and he/she will not be eligible for any further recruitment to the IAS. Therefore, it is crucial to give due importance to the eligibility criteria for the IAS exam to avoid any last-minute disappointment.
